Principles
We believe that every child, regardless of their background and family circumstances, has the right to be allowed to develop to their full potential. All children are different; they have different social and emotional needs as well as different academic needs and as such the Governing Body of Alexandra Infants’ School is committed to meeting the needs of all children in school within a caring and nurturing environment.
Background
The Pupil Premium is a government initiative that targets extra money at pupils from deprived backgrounds. Research shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds underachieve compared to those children who are less disadvantaged. The Pupil Premium is provided to schools in order to support those children from disadvantaged backgrounds and to narrow the gap in attainment with their peers.
The Government uses the eligibility for free school meals as an indicator for deprivation and, from the academic year 2011-2012, has given schools additional funding based on the number of children entitled to free school meals in order to narrow the gap in attainment. In addition to those currently entitled to Free School Meals the grant also includes children who have been eligible for free school meals in the last 6 years.
The Government leaves it up to individual schools to decide how the Pupil Premium Grant is used but schools are accountable for spending the money to improve pupil achievement and to ‘narrow the gap’ and are required to demonstrate that they have employed effective and appropriate strategies to support the eligible children using this funding.
