Oracy Vision

At Alexandra Infants’ School, our aim is to provide a high-quality Oracy education. We recognise the significance of speaking and listening skills, as they lay the foundations for future success and are essential for effective communication throughout life.

Consequently, we have embedded Oracy at the heart of our curriculum, with a commitment to fostering a culture that encourages children to become confident speakers, articulate in their views, and reflective in their thinking. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop high-quality speaking and listening skills, and we are dedicated to making this vision a reality.

At Alexandra Infants’ School, we are committed to creating a learning environment that is inclusive, supportive, and stimulating. We strive to provide our children with a well-rounded education that prepares them for future challenges and opportunities, whether in their academic pursuits or beyond. Our participation in the Voice 21 Oracy programme is a testament to our dedication to providing the highest quality education, and we look forward to continuing to work together to achieve our goals.

Subject leader promise

My name is Miss Davenport and I am the Oracy leader at Alexandra Infants’ school. As a dedicated educator, I am committed to fostering a love of Oracy amongst our pupils and emphasising the significance of acquiring these essential skills throughout their educational journey. It is my firm belief that every child deserves to be immersed in a language-rich environment, where they are encouraged to engage in high-quality discussions on a daily basis.

Our school is dedicated to providing a nurturing atmosphere that stimulates vocabulary development, challenges thinking, and promotes self-awareness and reflection skills. I am passionate about ensuring that all children, regardless of their home language and background, have equal opportunities to develop their Oracy skills. These skills are vital for their future success, and it is our responsibility as educators to provide them with the tools and support necessary to excel in later life. By doing so, we can empower our children to become confident, articulate, and effective communicators, capable of expressing their thoughts and ideas with clarity and precision.

I am committed to working closely with our teaching staff to ensure that Oracy is embedded across the curriculum, and that our children are provided with a comprehensive and well-rounded education. I am excited to see our pupils grow and develop their Oracy skills, and I am confident that, together, we can make a positive impact on their future. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our Oracy programme, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Oracy curriculum

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure that Oracy is seamlessly integrated throughout our subjects and topics, whilst also being taught as a discrete entity. This approach enables us to provide a comprehensive education that empowers every child to find their voice and achieve success, irrespective of their background.

A key focus of our Oracy curriculum is based around Voice 21’s ‘Oracy Framework’ which focuses on the development of essential skills, including physical, linguistic, cognitive, and social and emotional abilities. We believe that these skills are fundamental in enabling our children to communicate effectively and articulate their thoughts and ideas with confidence.

As part of our endeavour to create an Oracy-rich curriculum, we are proud to be participating in the Voice 21 Oracy programme. This initiative provides us with invaluable support and resources, enabling us to develop a curriculum that is tailored to meet the unique needs of our pupils. By working in collaboration with Voice 21, we are confident that we can make a positive impact on the lives of our children, providing them with the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in all aspects of life.

To achieve this goal, we have implemented a range of activities designed to help our children demonstrate their Oracy skills. These include class discussions and debates, where pupils are encouraged to engage in respectful and thoughtful dialogue, assemblies, which provide a platform for them to share their ideas and perspectives with a wider audience, and show and tell sessions, where they can practice articulating their thoughts and feelings. Additionally, our pupils will have the opportunity to present their learning, allowing them to develop their public speaking skills and build confidence in communicating their ideas to others.

The integration of Oracy into our curriculum has been a deliberate and thoughtful process, with the ultimate goal of empowering our children to become effective communicators. We are committed to providing our pupils with a comprehensive education that prepares them for success in all aspects of life, from academic pursuits to social interactions and beyond.
